Stake Canada is on Alberta’s gaming register. The site is not open yet

On 9 October 2026 the Alberta regulator lists Stake Canada Ltd. as an iGaming operator, through 24 September 2027. Stake says it wants to take bets on 12 October, if a second contract is signed. The crypto site at stake.com is a different company.

On 6 October 2026 Stake said it had secured a licence to operate in Alberta. We opened the public register ourselves on 9 October. The card is real. The casino is not open.

  • Name on the register: Stake Canada Ltd.
  • Class: iGaming, operator.
  • Expires: 24 September 2027.
  • Licence number on the card: none.
  • Website on the card: none.
  • What Stake says happens next: fully operational on 12 October 2026, if an operating agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation is signed.
  • Status on 9 October 2026: registered. Not taking bets under this registration.
  • What the register says
  • Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis keeps a public list of gaming registrants. A search for Stake on 9 October returned one company.

Stake Canada Ltd. Stream: iGaming. Class: iGaming – Operator. Expires on 24 September 2027.

That is the whole card. No address, no email, no domain, no licence number of the kind you see on a Curaçao certificate. The regulator’s own news list, as it loaded the same day, had no Stake headline.

Alex Jovanovic: “I read the card, not the headline. One company, one class, one expiry. Until that card shows a website, I will not tell a player the Alberta site is live.”

What Stake said on 6 October

The same day, Stake Canada put out a statement. Kris Abbott, named there as country manager, said this:

“Our planned entry into Alberta represents an exciting milestone step for us in Canada. We are not here to blend in. We are here to raise the bar and bring the distinctive Stake experience to Alberta’s highly engaged player audience.”

Birgitte Sand, a board member at Stake Canada, said securing the licensing “provides a strong foundation for the company’s development in Canada” and praised the province, the regulator and the Alberta iGaming Corporation for the new framework.

The statement then gives the date that matters more than the word “licence”:

Subject to an operating agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation, Stake Canada expects to be fully operational on 12 October 2026.

Two weeks earlier, on 24 September, Abbott had already told reporters: “We’re a registered operator as of today and we expect that licensing and an operating agreement are not too far behind.” He also said Stake Canada had applied in July for extra time to finish the platform and the certification.

Reporters have put the end of that grace period at 13 October 2026. The regulator pages we opened do not print that date, so we are not calling it a deadline we verified. What Abbott did say, in his own words, is that the agreement was still ahead of them on 24 September, and the 6 October statement still makes 12 October conditional.

Stake Canada has also said the first Alberta offer is a sportsbook and a casino, without poker and without daily fantasy. That is the company’s plan. It is not a provincial ban on poker.

Why a registration is not a launch

Alberta opened its private iGaming market on 13 July 2026. The regulator’s own page sets two steps, and both are required before an operator takes bets.

The regulator registers the company and writes the rules. The Alberta iGaming Corporation signs the commercial agreement, and it handles anti-money-laundering, complaints and the financial reports. The regulator’s page says an operator must be registered and must have that agreement.

The register shows step one. Stake’s own sentence shows step two is still unsigned. A player in Calgary cannot deposit on the strength of the card we read on 9 October.

Once a site does go live, the provincial rules are plain. Ads from an approved operator carry the Alberta iGaming Corporation logo and a responsible-gambling line, including 211 Alberta. Athletes, and anyone who appeals to minors, cannot front the ads, unless the ad is about responsible gambling. Self-exclusion is central: a player can shut themselves out of every registered iGaming site, every land casino and racing centre, or both, for six months or for up to three years. A site in one province does not share a wallet with a site in another.

The other Stake, at stake.com

Stake Canada Ltd. is not the company behind stake.com.

stake.com is operated by Medium Rare N.V. Its licence, in the terms we read on 28 September 2026, is Curaçao Gaming Authority OGL/2024/1451/0918. That certificate does not become an Alberta registration because a sister company got onto a provincial list.

On that same read, Ontario was on the prohibited list. Alberta was not. We have not re-read those terms for this post, so do not treat that as today’s geo check. If you already have a balance on stake.com, do not expect it to move to an Alberta site. The provincial rules call for a separate wallet.

stake.ca did not open when we tried it on 9 October. We are not describing what that address shows.

Alex Jovanovic: “Our read today: the Alberta file is real, and it is unfinished. Stake Canada is on the register through 24 September 2027. It has told the public it still needs the operating agreement before 12 October. stake.com is a different licence in a different country. I would wait for a live Alberta site with the provincial logo on it, then read that site’s own terms, before I moved a dollar.”

What to check before you deposit

If you are in Alberta and you want the regulated product, wait for the site that Stake Canada actually opens. Then check four things yourself.

  • The operator name in the footer should be Stake Canada Ltd., and the public register should still list it as an iGaming operator.
  • Advertising and the site should show the Alberta iGaming Corporation mark, plus a responsible-gambling line and 211 Alberta.
  • Your account will be a new one. Do not send crypto to an address from stake.com and assume it lands in Alberta.
Self-exclusion on the new site can cover every registered iGaming site in the province, not just Stake. Read the term you are agreeing to. Six months is the short option. Three years is the long one.

Our Stake Casino review is the house file on stake.com. This post does not change that score. It is about a Canadian company and a provincial register.
